Sometimes, the instinct of protection and the desire of see justice done, make people forget impartiality and their minds can’t think on others possibilities, because they accept only the one they can see. Above all, is necessary to say that Rachel Corrie’s death was a tragedy and there’s no doubt of it. But it is also a death badly explained, hard to understand and full of confusion . I will not give my opinion because as I said it is a very complicated case and I don’t have enough information to do so, but I would like to analyze it a little. But first of all, I want to say, that I understand the disappointment of her parents as it’s perfectly normal when parents loose his son or daughter on a tragic way like this one and do not see justice as they would like to see. But it was the israeli army really guilty on the Rachel Corrie’s death? From the images I saw it’s hard to tell and as I said in the beginning; it seems to me, that opinions against or for his culpability, come more of partial reactions of anger and sadness, than a real vision of what happened. Let’s see from the side of family and friends of Rachel. They sad she was wearing a orange coat and a megaphone. Well, with this two things, it’s hard to understand, how the bulldozer’s driver didn’t saw her. On other hand it’s possible that he didn’t really saw her. As I said, images are not conclusive and so it’s very hard to interpret them. It’s also very well known, the abusive treatment, with which sometimes, the israeli army, treats his adversaries and so could be this death provoked by arrogance? Or by ingenuity of Rachel? In fact, and without criticize her high humanism, she could have provoked her own death, because of a irresponsible behavior. I’m not saying that she made it on purpose but sometimes people feel so highly involved on idealistic causes, that they put themselves in danger, and we all know that the youth is a perfect time of dreams and peaceful desires. Another reason for her possible ingenuity is the way, how she placed in front of the bulldozer. I think, she was brave but it’s not reasonable why she stood so many time in a dangerous place on her own risk. The only explanation I see, and it’s why I talk about ingenuity again, it’s maybe she didn’t get out because she thought that with a orange coat it will be impossible that the bulldozer’s driver couldn’t see her. In this case, her ingenuity was trust to much in her own instincts.
But, one thing, we shouldn’t forget. Whatever happened on that day and whatever it was a accident or a crime, she had the courage to defy an army in a peaceful way in a dangerous territory. And why? Only because she had a enormous sense of humanism and solidarity that unfortunately seems to be much less present nowadays. So she became a symbol of the palestinian fight but I think also a symbol of tenacity against injustice and abuse against human rights.
P.S: The judge decided not to condemn the israeli army but at least it would be positive that he had recognized the constant violations made by the army against palestinian people. Not to do so, make the impression that Rachel Corrie was totally guilty as she shouldn’t be there, but she was only defending a right that is totally fair: the right of people have a home. The only problem it was maybe she took a great risk.
